Powell vs. Gay and Nike vs. Adidas
No race between Powell and Gay was the order of the day in conditions for ducks.
After it was reported that a face-off between gay and Powell did not take place in Europe due to an "ask" for more money than meet organisers were apparently willing to pay and statements that Powell was not allowed to race Gay; the two have not raced since Powell lost composure in Osaka and slipped to bronze as Gay powered past him for gold.
Yokohama Japan:
Showing he can still win a race if needed Gay took the 100m in Yokohama with a time of 10.23, over Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles and Naoki Tsukahara of Japan the time was indicative of the poor conditions as much as the fact that Gay is probably not in the form that took him to triple gold in Osaka.
Tyson Gay has been reported as tired since that event and described as "rusty" when beaten by Spearmon a few days before in Shanghai China so he needed a win; peaking is hard for any athlete and after such an event there is often little to prove.
Gay also wanted to come home first at Sunday's meet as he has really not stepped out to do anything of note since his Osaka victories.
"Given the success I've had here I wanted to win this race,"
Gay told AP:
"It went well. There was a bit of a negative wind. It was hard to warm up but it was nice to win here."
The 100-meters race did not include world record holder and dominant post-Osaka sprinter Asafa Powell; and thats probably the end of any hope for a match up of the World Champion and the World Record Holder this season with only one big Asian meet left in Korea before the bags are packed and the track circus heads home for the winter.
Powell went on to injure his hamstring in the 200m which probably spells the end of his season seeing him sat on the track in the wet cool chill of a Japanese September; he's got little to prove now and closes the year on top of the world at 100m in the record books.
Sadly the promise of the two fastest men on earth battling each other as rivals from Europe to Asia in a set of showcase races that pitched the Nike brand up against "team Adidas" three stripes would have been one of the biggest boosts to track athletics in years; it simply did not happen.
